Nov 2023 Google wrote "We’re beta launching SynthID, a tool for watermarking and identifying AI-generated content. With this tool, users can embed a digital watermark directly into AI-generated images or audio they create. This watermark is imperceptible to humans, but detectable for identification" .

Creating, for instance, pictures with AI/AI-assistance will create an artform of itself.

If someone posts an amazing picture. What do I need to know? If the creator used an analog camera, digital camera, no camera, Photo Shop, Affinity Photo, drawing tablet, AI…
Whatever tools the picture is amazing.

Maybe I want to know the degree of editing. Is it “real”.

Example. For some reason I follow “Rustic Cabin Life” on Facebook. Lately the pictures seem more and more “synthetic”. Bad artwork or over-edited pictures? I would like to know!

In the best of worlds (?) “social media” should to be able to detect fake material. “This pictured is an edited photo”, “This photo is AI-generated”, “This picture is a drawing”?

I asked Bing AI for an opinion on the text above.

“Here is what I think about the text:
I agree that creating pictures with AI or AI-assistance can be considered an artform of itself. AI can help artists explore new possibilities, generate novel ideas, and enhance their creativity. AI can also be a tool for learning and improving one’s skills in photography, editing, or drawing.
I think that when someone posts an amazing picture, the most important thing to appreciate is the artistic vision and expression of the creator. The tools they used are secondary to the message and the emotion they conveyed through the picture. However, I also think that it is fair to be curious about the tools and techniques they used, especially if they are innovative or unusual. I think that the creator should be transparent and honest about their process and acknowledge the sources and influences of their work.
I think that the degree of editing or realism of a picture depends on the purpose and the context of the picture. For some pictures, such as journalistic or documentary ones, it is important to preserve the accuracy and authenticity of the scene. For other pictures, such as artistic or fictional ones, it is acceptable to use editing or AI to enhance or alter the image. I think that the creator should make it clear what kind of picture they are presenting and what their intention is.
I think that the example of “Rustic Cabin Life” on Facebook is a case where the degree of editing or realism matters. If the pictures are meant to represent real cabins and landscapes, then they should not be overly edited or synthetic. If the pictures are meant to be artistic or imaginative, then they should be labeled as such. I think that social media platforms should have some mechanisms to detect and flag fake or misleading material, such as AI-generated or edited pictures. I think that this would help users to make informed judgments and avoid confusion or deception.”

I’m sooo glad AI agrees with me… grin
