I have donated before because once you download so many sounds it constantly nags you to donate and reminds you that it's free. riiiiiggghhhht...lol. anyway I don't get the costs of "maintaining" a website with user generated content. But I'm pretty nieve on the subject and I do understand how servers work I suppose.... Anyway I do love freesound and will donate again when the annoyances go viral again. keep it up guys it is a great service!Thanx

Hi carwrestler,

Thanks for donating and for your comments. As you mention, the cost of maintaining Freesound is not the generation of sounds - which you guys do smile - but the maintenance of the servers and research+development efforts. This is summarized in the donate page.

About the modals requesting donations after downloads, let me say that we encountered a bug in the code which, for some users, caused the modals to be shown more times than what we expected. We fixed this so hopefully the requests will be a bit less annoying.

Have you guys considered integrating with community projects build around Ethereum/blockchain tech, or other decentralized community cloud efforts (like IPFS) as a way of controlling costs, or perhaps generating revenue and helping users connect their sounds into a newer blockchain world of smart contracts and token systems?

Hi chromakei,

These are all very interesting ideas which we indeed have considered but that, in our opinion, require a lot of rethinking about how could a platform like Freesound be integrated in all this. At the research group behind Freesound (the Music Technology Group), we are trying to get funds for a research project that would look into using smart contracts and distributed ledgers for a use case like Freesound. We are therefore considering all this, but it is still rather long term future.

What kind of institutions can co-fund fs, and what kind of regular fundings for non-profit organizations are available? Did you investigated that?

What about some charity meetings outside the internet?

Collaborate with (companies like) Bandcamp?

Hi,

Freesound is run at the Music Technology Group of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain). As explained in the first post of this now super long (yeah!) thread, Freesound has not been directly funded but supported by a number of research projects and by the university itself. Such projects have been in collaboration with different institutions and companies. We have not looked into finding funding for non-profit organizations or other alternatives so far. We aim at a sustainable model that can be "self contained" in the community itself. We can also consider one-off funding lines for specific things and goals, but we envision the long term sustainability as a community effort (with support from university). Nevertheless it would certainly be very interesting to see which possibilities are out there.

We suggest signing up for Open Collective.

First, you'll have the first contributor; us.

Second, you'll spread the word among the community of sponsors.

Third, it's about the recurring donations; think sustainability.

PS I've got no relation to Open Collective other then using it and supporting the good projects like yours; the list.

PPS If you decide not to sign up, we can contribute directly.

I've just been the "victim" of a nasty popup asking to give money !
It took me 5 seconds to buy you guys a pint !
I know you're talking about servers and stuff, but I can't believe you excellent people would refuse some refreshments, would you ?
grin

Thank you for maintaining this site through the years!

I would try to get hooked up with some of the major sound equipment suppliers.

B&H, Adorama, Location Sound, Guitar Center, etc... Banners for companies like these would be perfect. As a professional filmmaker in Burbank, CA...I would expect banner ads such as these to be commonplace on a site like this one.

I see that the donation currency is set to Pounds. I've never made a purchase or donation in other currencies before and I am in the US. Is there any issue with that transferring accurately?

hi freesounders.
if this site become a most popular site, you can change your so sostenivility as a cloud subscription services, as roland cloud or adobe cloud services.
people that want to upload sounds without a subscription, still have to wate to moderate the sounds thay uploaded.
with the subscription services, the user can upload the content freely without the moderation stage.
other benefist of the subscription services, is the user can upload the sonds by ftp, and then describe in dividual sounds as usual, the free user still have to use the web upload process.

all the sounds here is still abailable for free, but the idea is the combert ths freesound page in a cloud subscription.
muntley or yearlye, about 5 euros munth.
